Kendrick Hardaway awarded Fulbright Research Grant in New Zealand

A doctoral candidate from Purdue University, Kendrick Hardaway was awarded a 2023-2024 Fulbright US Graduate Award to work with the Civil Systems Research group. His research question:

How can communities prepare for climate change uncertainty?

“I am honored to receive a U.S. Fulbright Grant due to the program’s deep commitment to international collaboration,” Kendrick says.

For his Fulbright, Kendrick will work in partnership with local researchers, businesses, and government officials, using risk science methods to better understand and plan for climate adaptation in New Zealand cities. His goal is to help communities mitigate environmental impacts and make urban infrastructure more resilient to increased and/or more severe natural hazards.

“The Civil Systems research team led by Dr. Tom Logan provides me with a unique opportunity to perform consequential research on climate adaptation and uncertainty. The lab has produced high quality, internationally recognized research regarding climate adaptation. I’m thankful to be part of such an environment for my Fulbright experience,” Kendrick says.

Kendrick’s research looks specifically at coupled systems, their environmental impacts, and how climate change will affect their function. While in New Zealand, Kendrick plans to work on a variety of research projects. These include data-driven managed retreat at the local level to theory-based contributions to climate risk and resilience.

Started in 1946 by American Senator J. William Fulbright from Arkansas, the Fulbright purpose is to foster mutual understanding between different countries and cultures to ensure a peaceful future for the world. The Fulbright Grant provides Kendrick with 10 months of funding to work with the Civil Systems Group at the University of Canterbury. Through this opportunity, Kendrick aims to continue connecting the global climate adaptation movement, promoting international scholarship, and participating in knowledge exchange.
