Marcelle Scadden Awarded Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa Stipend

Marcelle was recently awarded the annual stipend from Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa for her PhD research. Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa is a Natural Hazards Commission (NHC) Toka Tū Ake (formerly EQC) funded centre for mātauranga Māori research excellence. Their mission is to build Māori disaster risk reduction research and workforce capabilities, as well as the development and application of Indigenous innovation for resilience in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Marcelle’s research is titled: “Mātauranga-a-hapū: informing climate resilience.”

Her research project aims to support hapū to be able to prepare more effectively for climate change in Aotearoa by understanding how te ao Māori influences risk perceptions and how mātauranga-a-hapū shapes adaptation options and actions. She examines the socio-cultural construction of risks to understand the role of interconnectedness between community and environment when approaching climate risks.

In April 2024, Marcelle attended a three-day noho marae in Mahitahi/Bruce Bay on the West Coast, at Te Tauraka Waka a Māui marae. The hui-a-wānanga consisted of interesting discussion sessions from other attendees and guest speakers, as well as field excursions to Gillespies Beach and Te Ara Kairaumati/Lake Matheson to connect with te taiao and explore the impacts of climate change on whenua and wai. She looks forward to the upcoming hui-a-wānanga and the opportunity to develop her research with the support of Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa.
